Andrew Michalski receives 2017 BME Leadership award

2017 Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program Director’s Prize in Student Leadership

Andrew Michalski - Andrew has been a major contributor to graduate students across campus, and to the BME program specifically. He has volunteered to support the BME program consistently throughout his training. On the BME Graduate Student Association he was the VP Outreach for a year starting in May 2015, which was his first major leadership role in BME. In other roles, he has always jumped in to support the BME program through the BME Graduate Student Orientation (2015) as a Planning Committee Member, as well as on the organizing committee of the BME Graduate Program Winter Formal (2016). He was a Group Volunteer Leader in a BME outreach event where they cleaned up the river pathway as part of the 49th Annual City of Calgary River and Pathway Cleanup (2016) and his other BME outreach work has been working with the Stephen’s Backpacks Society. Clearly, Andy is strong and valuable contributor to the BME program, and through his actions has provided excellent leadership to the BME graduate community. He is also a valuable contributor to the McCaig Institute, and by extension, the many BME faculty and students who are members of the institute. He has been a member of the McCaig Institute Seminar Organizing Committee (2015-16) as well as the Trainee Leadership Committee (2015-17), and as a senior student representative, he has attended numerous Executive Committee meetings to represent his colleagues. He also organized the first McCaig Summer Student Research Symposium (2016), acting as the Event Director, and it has now become an annual event. He often volunteers for other institute activities, such as the public Wood Forum meeting held each year.
